    Third-generation farmers have given a wonderful legacy to Whatcom County residents.  Nearly 23 acres of their 300-acre family farm has been set aside for use as a county park, with Whatcom Land Trust receiving the conservation easement to protect the natural values of the property. 

    Don and Judy Jensen chose to share acreage that holds a remnant of the original forest that once covered lowland Whatcom County.  Towering 100-year-old Douglas firs provide habitat for hawks, owls and other raptors, as well as cover for deer, coyote, bobcat and other native species.  Other tree species found there include Sitka spruce, Western red cedar, western hemlock and wild cherry.  The understory includes red elderberry, trailing blackberry, wild roses, red huckleberry and a variety of ferns. 

    Residential areas adjoin the property on three sides, while the fourth side remains agricultural land.  The property will provide hiking trails in an area of the county that has few parks or recreation sites.
