Once owned by Joe Galbraith, the winner of the first “Ski to Sea” Race, the East Acme Farm includes riparian area that is important habitat for all five species of Northwest salmon (Chinook, pink, chum, coho and sockeye).  Rainbow trout, bull trout, native char and steelhead also are found in the river corridor protected by the easement.

In 1993, David and Kay Syre donated the farm to Whatcom County Parks and Recreation for use as a public park.  A conservation easement on 113 acres was deeded to Whatcom Land Trust to protect the riparian habitat, provide a wildlife migration corridor, protect water quality and buffer the South Fork Nooksack from recreation activity.

The property includes areas of mature mixed forest, pastureland and riparian restoration plantings.  Eagles and elk are among species found on the property, which is located near several other conserved properties on the South Fork.  Two other homestead farms owned by Whatcom County Parks and Recreation, Overby Farmstead and Nesset Farm, are nearby.  Taken together, the three farmstead parks span five miles of South Fork river frontage.

Our Heritage

We are entrusted with an extraordinary natural heritage. Saltwater shorelines, forests, lakes, farms, mountains, and wildlife habitat are all part of a legacy that only we can preserve for future generations. The desire to share this heritage with our children and grandchildren unites all who treasure Whatcom County.
