Location: South Bellingham, adjacent to Interurban Trail
Size: 16.5 acres
Public Access: Yes
Easement granted: December 26, 2001
Easement type: Conservation
Grantees: Whatcom Land Trust
Originally donated to Whatcom Land Trust in 1996 by Sahlin, Smith and Hemingway, this wetland easement is a key link in the Bellingham Greenways Project. The original gift included $15,000 for the Trust to protect the property and enhance long-term public enjoyment. In 2001, the WLT donated the Chuckanut Ridge Wetland property to the Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department, retaining a conservation easement.
Due to its location along the Interurban Trail, the parcel receives a great deal of recreational use, including hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Over seven acres of the property are wetlands that border the Interurban Trail, and the upland portion is a mature mixed forest. Taken together, the two ecosystems provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.
We are entrusted with an extraordinary natural heritage. Saltwater shorelines, forests, lakes, farms, mountains, and wildlife habitat are all part of a legacy that only we can preserve for future generations. The desire to share this heritage with our children and grandchildren unites all who treasure Whatcom County.
