This is where it all began for Whatcom Land Trust. Herman Miller’s family had this farm when he was born in 1918, and he has lived his entire life there. His desire to preserve the land for farming in perpetuity was the seed that grew into the Land Trust.
Mr. Miller was at the meeting in the basement of Dutch Mothers restaurant when the trust was formed, and the easement on his property was the first one completed. Land Trust board members related how difficult it was to learn to properly construct a conservation easement, and how “generous and patient” Miller was.
The easement protects the scenic and agricultural values of the land by fostering responsible agricultural processes and limiting residential use. Thank you, Herman Miller.
